Spring Awakening

Why see Spring Awakening?

The Innovative Deaf West Return

Following their hugely successful adaptation of Big River in 2003, LA's Deaf West returns to Broadway with an electric tale of sex, abuse and oppression. The company is comprised of both deaf and hearing actors and the show plays out in a mixture of both English and American sign language, sometimes with one character being portrayed by two actors at the same time.

Based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play (which was banned in many countries up until the mid 1900s), Spring Awakening focuses on budding teenage sexuality and the conservative Weimar society desperate to repress it. The show's writers Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater lend their 19th Century characters modern day attitudes and rock 'n' roll personas, to match the alternative rock score. The musical debuted on The Great White Way in 2006 and swept the board at the Tonys, picking up eight awards.

What is Spring Awakening About?

Wendla and Moritz are a pair of adolescents struggling to break through the smothering societal and moral codes of 19th Century Weimar Germany. Seeking something more from life, they embark on a voyage of personal and sexual exploration which puts them on a collision course with their elders and betters.

An Amazing Show...Amazing Cast!

I have had the pleasure of seeing this show 6 times and I will be going back. I have been a theater buff for over 30 yrs and I haven't seen anything this FRESH and ORIGINAL since I saw the original production of "A CHORUS LINE" in 1975. The first time I saw 'Spring Awakening" I remembered feeling the same rush of excitement, that WOW, this is something different, a breakthrough for the American Musical theater. The cast is Amazing, led by Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and the incrediable John Gallagher Jr. He gives one of the best performances I have seen in a long time. Everyone should see this AMAZING show! ... Read more

Spring Awakening Rocks!!!

I have seen Spring Awakening several times and each time I am amazed that a play that was written in 1891 touches so many of the feelings that the youth of today experience in everyday life. The play is brilliantly written. The music brings the play in to our generation. The music is beautifully written and the cast is wonderful. The voices of the cast mesh to make this a memorable experience. I have found that each time I see this show I go through the same emotions - laughter, sadness, joy and excitement. I have been to numerous Broadway shows (Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Cats, etc.) and this is the most original play by far. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience something that is new, fresh and exciting. I also want to say that the cast has incredible vocals and it is a pleasure just to hear them sing. ... Read more
