Conductor Leonard Slatkin leads the New York Philharmonic Orchestra through a rousing performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's magnificent Fifth Symphony. Composed in 1937, the work is often interpreted as a response to Stalinist oppression, with heroic and tragic elements conveying both public compliance and private dissent. Its premiere in Leningrad was deemed a major success, and the symphony remains one of his most popular and frequently performed works.

A tragic story founded in truth has been reimagined and written for the stage by Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan, with music and lyrics contributed by the Avett Brothers.
