What Did Critics Think Of Eisenhower?

Author ScarletScarlet, June 23rd, 2023

Starring Tony Winner John Rubinstein

Richard Hellesen's Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground, the solo show starring Tony winner John Rubinstein, officially opened Off-Broadway June 20 following a week of preview performances.

The critics have been, seen and now spoken - let's find out what they thought of Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground...

"Rubinstein's thoroughly convincing, passionate, and captivating embodiment of Eisenhower is supported by apropos business and casual clothes of the era (with Sarah G. Conly serving as costume consultant), a tastefully appointed scenic design (by Michael Deegan), with period-style furnishings and props (including an over-sized vintage tape recorder and rotary-dial desk phone), and projections (by Joe Huppert) on the back wall of the set that show the expansive grounds and golf course of Eisenhower Farm, changing light and weather that shift with the time of day and moods (from a sunny sky to a foreboding thunderstorm), and old black-and-white photos of Eisenhower and the well-known people and family members he discusses. They are enhanced by a natural lighting design (by Esquire Juachem) and sound (by Huppert) that includes voice-overs of speeches at the beginning of each act before Rubinstein enters the stage."

DC Theater Arts

John Rubenstein delivers a compelling turn in this solo biographical drama.

"Enhanced by projections of historical photographs that give the production the feel of an illustrated biography, Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground proves both a compelling solo drama and a welcome reminder that there was once a time when moderation did indeed play a vital role in national politics."

New York Stage Review

"If the writing glosses over some of the inconvenient truths of Eisenhower's life and career, Rubinstein, under Peter Ellenstein's direction, offers a complex and deeply rooted performance. Rubinstein does not so much offer an impersonation of Eisenhower, but he impressively captures the spirit of a man who strives for steadiness and calm while finding himself caught up in one global and national storm after another. It is a masterful acting achievement."

Talking Broadway

"John Rubenstein only vaguely looks like Eisenhower, lacking his military bearing and, at 5'8" stature; Ike was 5'10". He actually more closely resembles, facially, at least, Pres. Biden. As the performance progresses, and he ambles around the living room, sometimes with a drink in hand, he tells his story in a semblance of Eisenhower's mildly folksy, Midwesterner's way, gradually taking on something of his character's aura. You come to appreciate Eisenhower's casually modest demeanor, and thoughtful, sometimes eloquent, rhetoric. There are few fireworks displayed in this finely modulated performance, but you can feel the sense of honesty, fairy play, and idealism coursing through his bones."

Theater Life

"Having known people who went through McCarthyism and the terror that reigned upon the US, the plays defense of Eisenhaurer's not taking Joseph McCarthy, out sooner and stopping this evil stain on our country I found over simplified. This play does preach, but Rubinstein has a passion and a charisma for the material that commands the stage. He really is a wonderful treat to watch. The direction of Peter Ellenstein, kept the drama moving along."
