Andrew Lippa's ode to Harvey Milk receives its New York premiere this October, in a special one night only event at The Avery Fisher Hall. Part choral work and part theatre piece, I Am Harvey Milk builds a complex portrait of the ground-breaking politician through key scenes and events in his life. It traces his life from his New York boyhood through to his extraordinary career as the first openly gay person elected to public office, to his 1978 assassination by Dan White.
Lippa's oratoria first premiered last year in San Francisco, with Tony-winning Laura Benanti and the San Francisco Gay Man's Chorus. Broadway World's reviewing duo Hodges and Hodges gave the piece a glowing notice, saying it "soars even as it moves you to tears, joyously celebrating the human spirit and our shared humanity."
Andrew Lippa himself will be leading the performance as Milk, and will be joined by the Emmy and Tony Award-winning Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Glee). The two have a long history of collaboration, with Chenoweth winning her Tony Award in 1999 for her role in the revivial of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, for which Lippa wrote additional new songs. I Am Harvey Milk will be backed by the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the 120 member strong All-Star Broadway Men's Chorus.
