The Gentleman Caller

The Gentleman Caller at Cherry Lane Theater

Why see The Gentleman Caller?

When William met Tennessee

Based on true events, Philip Dawkins' The Gentleman Caller details the first encounter between future Pulitzer winners Tennessee Williams and William Inge. Taking place before the premiere of Williams' Glass Menagerie in 1944, it was a meeting which would play an important role in both men's ascent to legendary playwriting status.

Known for his intense, claustrophobic dramas, Tennessee Williams' plays include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, while Inge, less remembered today but arguably the more successful writer during the 1950s, was adept at sketching portraits of small-town America in works like Picnic and Splendour in the Grass.
