Opera Month: Looking Ahead - The Future of Opera

Author AbigailAbigail, October 18th, 2019

What will the future hold?

As our opera month draws to a close it's time to look at what lies ahead! Which opera composer's should you be keeping an eye on and which companies should you go and check out? Find out in our look ahead - The Future of Opera!

THREE OPERA COMPOSERS, YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

MATTHEW AUCOIN

Matthew Aucoin is LA Opera's artist in residence and co-artistic director of the American Modern Opera Company. Often compared to the great Richard Wagner, Aucoin's most prestigious works (to date) are his one-act opera Second Nature and his adaption of Walt Whitman's poem Crossing.

NICO MUCHLY

Having worked closely with both the Met and the ENO (English National Opera) Muchly is probably one of the best-known composers of his generation. All about moving opera forward, Muchly employs interesting story-telling techniques in order to captivate new audiences. Muchly's recent work with the ENO, Marnie, gained critical and commercial acclaim in 2017. It was so popular that it even turned the heads of the most stalwart of opera doubters.

MISSY MAZOLI

Grammy nominee Mazoli has been dubbed "Brooklyn's post-millennial Mozart" by Time Out New York. Her 2018 opera "Proving Up" launched Mazoli into opera super-stardom as it was critically acclaimed by the U.S press. Keep your eye out for performances of her earlier works, 2012's Song From The Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt and SALT, 2013's A Flourish of Green and 2016's Breaking The Waves.
