Condola Rashad Shines in Saint Joan
Booking through to June 10
The Manhattan Theatre Club's revival of Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan opened last night (April 25) to much anticipation, but what did the critics think?
Variety was full of praise for the star of the show, Condola Rashad, saying 'Condola Rashad steps into the starring role in a blaze of glory and claims it as her own. Rashad's depiction of the wide-eyed, visionary youth of fierce determination, unwavering faith and beguiling innocence - not to mention a beatific smile that radiates to the balcony - makes you a believer, too'.
New York Stage Review celebrated director, David Sullivan, saying 'Sullivan...manages to capture the timelessness and the topicality of Shaw's play without straining to emphasize the latter...Sullivan trusts the text and a superb company to show us how relevant the playwright's progressive humanism is right now'. With Deadline commenting on the staging and the supporting cast saying 'Mostly playing out on a smallish center portion of Scott Pask's gorgeous set - the stage is framed by golden rows suggesting the pipes of a grand cathedral organ - the production surrounds the beguiling Rashad with a cast strong enough to hold its own (no small thing)'.
Congratulations to the cast of Saint Joan! Here's to a hearty run.
