Slave Play Is A Must See On Broadway!

Author AbigailAbigail, October 18th, 2019

What did the critics think of the production's Broadway debut?

After thrilling audiences and critics alike during it's off-Broadway run last year Jeremy O. Harris' searing Slave Play has transferred to the main stem. But, what did the critics think?

The praise came thick and fast from The New York Times, calling Slave Play "one of the best and post provocative new works to show up on Broadway in years." They continued with, "The best plays aren't just about empathizing with the oppressed; they're also about accepting our connection to the oppressors. With asperity but also love, "Slave Play" lets us all see ourselves in the muddle that is race in America now." They finished with, "Such reflections are no longer common on Broadway. If "Slave Play" can bring them to a bigger audience... it will be a happy surprise indeed. Shock and offense may be just the ticket now."

Time Out New York continued the praise with, "Brash, smart and gleefully confrontational, this is the kind of show that starts arguments." They continued with, "Surprising and transgressive though it often is, Slave Play is not after shock for shock's sake. What it administers, with thrilling success, is shock treatment."

Deadline said, " One of Slave Play's accomplishments is its use of a commercial Broadway production as an insistently focused examination of whatever is meant when we make reference to the black experience, and in giving voice and the last word to those who live it."

Slave Play is now playing at the John Golden Theater through to January 5, 2020.
