Our review of The Iceman Cometh

The Iceman Cometh: with a cold truth!

Nicola QuinnNicola Quinn, April 11th, 2018

Brilliant, Captivating, Excellent

Denzel is superb... – brilliant, captivating, and undeniably committed to this energy-sapping role!

Fun Fact: American playwright Eugene O'Neill won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936. He shares this honor with the greats; such as, Sinclair Lewis, Pearl S. Buck, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Bob Dylan! O'Neill is also a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and undoubtedly paved the way for serious theatre in the United States.

Target Audience: Those wishing to pay homage to great American theatre, and yes - Denzel fans!

Best Bit: A masterclass for acting! The performances were tremendous, from Denzel Washington (Hickey), Colm Meaney (Hope), to David Morse (Larry), and beyond.

Morning After Effect: Misery loves company!

Woes and whiskey have always been good friends, proven by the misfits in Eugene O'Neill's play The Iceman Cometh. As these men wallow at the bottom of the barrel in Harry Hope's bar they reminisce about the days gone by and dream hopefully of a better tomorrow. And of course, tomorrow never comes. Much like Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot these men wait endlessly for the arrival of their friend Hickey whom they believe will turn things around (and buy them free drinks).

The audience of course share this anticipation - Hickey is played by Denzel Washington! As we wait with bated breath for this powerhouse to take to the stage you can feel the restlessness around you, the need for Denzel to lift this bleak spirit. Denzel is superb and well I guess, DENZEL WASHINGTON - brilliant, captivating, and undeniably committed to this energy-sapping role! There is no doubt that he naturally exudes a dominance and has a profound charisma which serves him well as he injects these traits into the enigmatic Hickey. I felt incredibly honored to watch this artist at work, live in action!

Many people will be drawn to this production to see Denzel, and it is WELL worth it; however, I must acknowledge that you will get far more bang for your buck as his fellow cast is a mix of superb talent! Each character is truly unique and their nuances of desperation and intention to turn things around are woven together with an equal thread of fear and defeatism. The writing is brilliant and under the excellent direction of George C. Wolfe these talents have lifted the lines off the page beckoning us to make tomorrow better, today!
