The Iceman Cometh

Why see The Iceman Cometh?

Denzel Washington Returns To The Great White Way

Two-time Oscar and Tony Award winner Denzel Washington returns to Broadway to tread the boards in one of the greatest modern tragedies to ever grace the stage. The Fences and Training Day actor joins Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolfe and EGOT-winning producer Scott Rudin as they tackle Nobel laureate Eugene O'Neill's formidable four-act epic. Nominated for one 2018 DRAMA DESK award and EIGHT 2018 Tony Awards including Best Leading Actor in a Play for Denzel Washington and Best Revival of a Play!

Running for a limited engagement of 14 weeks only, the production follows a succession of equally star-studded revivals, the last of which saw Nathan Lane take on the lead in 2015 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music. Washington, last seen on Broadway in the critically acclaimed Raisin In The Sun, will take on the role of Theodore "Hickey" Hickman, the charming, would-be evangelical travelling salesmen at the center of this darkly poetic American fable.

What is The Iceman Cometh About?

Set in 1912, The Iceman Cometh follows a group of individuals on the fringes of polite society. These down-and-outers include anarchists, prostitutes, alcoholics and faded war heroes. They seek oblivion and inebriation at Harry Hope's Saloon, waiting for the semi-annual visits of the charismatic and party-starting Hickey, whose each arrival brightens up their bleak existence.

Yet when Hickey arrives a changed man, extolling the virtues of sobriety, the saloon's inhabitants are thrown into turmoil. As with many of his other works, O'Neill explores the dark side of the American Dream, in which anticipation and unmet expectations writhe beneath best laid plans and intentions.

Our review

Brilliant, Captivating, Excellent

Woes and whiskey have always been good friends, proven by the misfits in Eugene O'Neill's play The Iceman Cometh. As these men wallow at the bottom of the barrel in Harry Hope's bar they reminisce about the days gone by and dream hopefully of a better t

Denzel the Savior

Otherwise a go to sleep depressing performance. And the Theatre is a fire Trap....very claustrophobic...Thankfully I never had a chance to spend $8 for a bottle of water as lines were too long because waiting area too small.... however it is getting five stars because Denzel delivered as expected and is a force whether on stage or behind the screen!!! ... Man, a lot of idiots go to the theater to see movie stars

And miss one of the greatest plays ever written. I was excited to see Denzel, but just as much to see Morse, Meany, Irwin, and the others, and frankly, my impression was that most of them were more seasoned stage actors than Mr. Washington, who had some problems projecting. But he delivered big with the famous lengthy monologue at the end. Not as great as Jason Robards (who I saw play Hickey in '85), but he beat Kevin Spacey hands down. Wolfe's staging is quietly innovative. There are points where it's a bit rushed, because of the play's length--often a problem with Iceman. Contrary to what the idiots say, people were laughing at all the right parts, and never at the wrong ones. The entire cast got a standing ovation from the packed house at the end, well-merited. I really don't know what to say to somebody so vapid who would see this brilliant production about the delusions and vanities of humankind and think only "Why didn't Denzel stick around to sign my Playbill?" ...
