Bright Star

Why see Bright Star?

A Bluegrass Musical

Written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, bluegrass musical Bright Star makes its Broadway debut following hugely successful runs in San Diego and Washington. A sweet and winsome show, Bright Star follows a family living in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, and the anxiety they experience when both their landscape and deeply held beliefs began to change. Nominated for four 2016 Tony Awards, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Broadway newcomer Carmen Cusack!

One of the most influential comedians of the past fifty years, Steve Martin has become something of a renaissance man in his later years, adding author, activist and art collector to his huge list of talents. He's also always been a banjo-fanatic, and in 2013 he collaborated with Grammy winning singer songwriter Edie Brickell on the album Love Has Come For You, a partnership that proved so successful that they set about writing a musical together.

What is Bright Star About?

Set in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, the musical skips between 1923 and 1945, as young, aspiring writer Billy returns home from the war. Once settled, he meets the brilliant and melancholy Alice Murphy, editor of The Southern Literary Journal. Together, in this sweeping tale of enduring love, they discover a long-hidden secret, that is sure to change their lives forever.

Storytelling at its best

Bright Star - a love story; takes place in the South ; blue grass music, featuring banjos and fiddles; cast is outstanding, especially the lead Carmen Cusack. Their timing is impeccable; the score is memorable; very simple staging that is reminiscent of "Once. " Loved the simplicity of the set and in the telling of the story. The storytelling, the characters, the music, that's what one remembers. Bright Star touches your heart. ... Read more
