Kentridge reminds us that artistic creation can outlast the worst despots
The Brooklyn Rail
New York Philharmonic Orchestra have an audio-visual treat in store, with South African visual artist William Kentridge's thought-provoking stop-motion movie Oh To Believe In Another World taking center stage on-screen as the orchestra performs Shostakovich's magnificent Symphony No. 10.
The poignant animation was made in response to Shostakovich's symphony, exploring the composer's complex relationship with the powers that be in Soviet-era Russia. With puppets portraying the historical figures of Stalin, Lenin and Trotsky, the performance is a stunning meeting between art, history and music.
