New York Philharmonic - Slatkin Leads Shostakovich 5

Why see New York Philharmonic - Slatkin Leads Shostakovich 5?

A Roaring Symphony

Conductor Leonard Slatkin leads the New York Philharmonic Orchestra through a rousing performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's magnificent Fifth Symphony. Composed in 1937, the work is often interpreted as a response to Stalinist oppression, with heroic and tragic elements conveying both public compliance and private dissent. Its premiere in Leningrad was deemed a major success, and the symphony remains one of his most popular and frequently performed works.

Also on the program is the New York premiere of Triathlon by John Corigliano, featuring the impressive soloist Timothy McAllister on saxophone, and the jazz-influenced Double Play by Cindy McTee.
