New York City Ballet: Coppelia at David H Koch Theater

Why see New York City Ballet: Coppelia?

A Fantastical Tale

This delightful masterpiece performed by the iconic New York City Ballet tells the enchanting story of a whimsical inventor and his astonishing creation. This lifelike doll sparks both curiosity and chaos in a quaint village. For more than a century, Copplia has been enchanting audiences. In 1974, when Balanchine decided to add Copplia to NYCB's repertory, he took the opportunity to update the ballet, adding some male solos gently, more pas de deux, and a new third act.

What is the history?

First brought to life in 1870 by Arthur St. Lon, it has since been lovingly reimagined by legends such as Petipa and Cecchetti, and most notably, George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova in the 20th century. When George Balanchine added Copplia to the New York City Ballet's repertoire in 1974, he brought a fresh perspective to this beloved classic. Balanchine's staging continues to enchant new generations of ballet enthusiasts with new male solos, tender pas de deux, and a reimagined third act.

What are the acts?

In Act I, we are introduced to the heart of the village where life teems with vibrant character dances and youthful pranks. The innocent love of Swanilda and Frantz is set against the backdrop of Dr. Copplius's mysterious workshop, where his enigmatic doll, Copplia, seems almost alive. This act is a dance of intrigue and wonder, as Swanilda's curiosity leads her to discover the secret of Copplia.

Act II dives deeper into the mystery and humor as Swanilda and her friends, disguised as dolls, infiltrate Dr. Copplius's workshop. The scene unfolds with a delightful mix of trickery and comedy, leading to a heartwarming revelation that unravels the illusion of Copplia.

Act III, a Balanchine original, transforms into a joyous celebration with exuberant village festivities. Here, the narrative takes a back seat as the ballet crescendos into a series of dazzling dances, each one a jewel in the crown of classical ballet. The act culminates in a grand finale that bursts with color, energy, and the pure joy of movement, a fitting tribute to the legacy of the ballet.
