Michael Stuhlbergh returns to Broadway in this Olivier nominated play
"If the politicians cannot save Russia, then we businessmen must. We have not just the responsibility but the duty to become Russian heroes"
The machinations of Russia's oligarchs are laid bare in this Tony-nominated "lusciously livewire" (The Telegraph) play from The Crown creator Peter Morgan and Enron director Rupert Goold, transfers to Broadway. Following two stellar runs in London where it won five-star accolades from just about every theatre critic in the capital, Patriots will star Call Me By Your Name's Michael Stuhlbarg in his first Broadway appearance in 20 years as Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Putin's machiavellian kingmaker, and later, sworn nemesis. Alongside, two of the London cast reprise their roles; Luke Thallon as Roman Abramovich and Will Keen in his Olivier-winning role as Vladimir Putin.
What is the story?
In the early days of the fall of the Soviet Union as Russia is scrambling for leadership, a new class of ruler emerges, the millionaire businessmen; otherwise known as oligarchs. On this battlefield, the fight to reign supreme is scrappy, ugly, and often downright dirty, with Vladimir Putin only too ready to hitch a ride to the top under the protection of these new moneyed tzars. Following one Boris Berezovsky from his place at Putin's table to his eventual fall from grace, Peter Morgan puts the whole corrupt and largely terrifying process on show in this searingly relevant and thrilling new play.
