Tony-winning drama Six Degrees of Separation is revived on Broadway in 2017, with acting royalty Allison Janney and John Benjamin Hickey leading the cast. This acclaimed revival has earned two nominations in the 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play! Inspired by the true story of con man David Hampton, Six Degrees begins with a young man (played by Corey Hawkins) turning up on the doorstep of a wealthy Manhattan couple, bleeding from a knife wound and claiming to be the son of Sidney Poitier. Endlessly charismatic, he insinuates himself into their lives, and brings on something of a spiritual awakening in the couple, before events take an unexpected turn.

Seven time Emmy winner and two-time Tony nominee Allison Janney is best known for her role as C.J. Cregg on TV's The West Wing, and was last seen treading the Broadway boards in 2009's musical 9 to 5. John Benjamin Hickey's many Broadway credits include Cabaret, The Crucible and The Normal Heart, which won him a 2011 Tony Award.

What is Six Degrees About?

Art dealer Flan Kitteridge and his wife Ouisa are living out their comfortable existence in a Central Park apartment when a knock on their door changes their lives, and relationship, forever. Outside is a young black man named Paul, who claims to know their children at Havard, and more extraordinarily, that he is the son of the actor Sidney Poitier. Flan and Ouisa invite him inside and, over the ensuing night, Paul regales them with his wit and intelligence, giving them a glimpse of the rewarding relationship they wish they had with their own children.

Yet Paul is not who he seems, and when his charade is revealed, the couple are left reeling. For Ouisa at least, Paul's deception has triggered a profound change deep within her, and she's determined that his visit should be remembered for the amazing moment of connection it was, and not just another bizarre anecdote to pass around at dinner parties.

While the notion that everyone on the planet is linked by 'six degrees of separation' has been around since the 1920s, it was John Guare's play, and the subsequent 1993 movie adaptation with Will Smith and Stockard Channing, which really popularised it.
