The Greatest

New Jersey Ballet reminds us of the timelessness of ballet's greatest hits, with a performance of some of the best and most beloved works in the history of the artform. The program includes two of George Balanchine's greatest works in Serenade and Rubies, as well as the second act from the enduring masterpiece that is Swan Lake.

George Balanchine's Serenade is set to Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C, and was born from his teaching at the School of American Ballet. Meanwhile, thought to be based on Russian and German folklore, Swan Lake is the story of a young Prince, a Princess bewitched as a Swan, their forbidden love and the evil sorcerer they must overcome to lift his terrible curse. The second act, in which a moonlit lakeside plays host to Siegfried and Odette's first meeting, is full of budding romance and loving compassion. A splendid night at the ballet!
