Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists

Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists at BAM Harvey Lichtenstein Theater

Why see Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists?

Dark New Play

Tiago Rodriguez returns to New York with a dark work about a shocking tradition and the complex moral questions it poses. A family from Portugal has upheld a shocking ritual for seven decades: they gather together through the generations to execute a fascist. When young Catarina questions the morality and necessity of this violent custom, the family is plunged into conflict and an examination of the question: are violent means justified in the pursuit of a better world?

Tiago Rodrigues is a playwright, director and actor who also serves as artistic director of the Festival d'Avignon. His works have been described as empathetic and thought-provoking, told from a place of compassion while challenging audiences to see things differently. Don't miss this compelling play!

Requires work for the viewer but well worth the effort!

I was a bit wary regarding the need to read subtitles..but the effort required quickly felt natural as I was immersed in the tone of this production and intrigued by the simplicity yet evocative nature of the sets. The tensions created were built slowly and with great care using important and tempting morsels of information. Along the way there were moments when the moral/ethical/impossible dilemma presented was expressed with a level of “wordiness” which could have become tiresome in the hands of a less gifted writer and less phenomenal actors. The cultivation of a deep examination of profoundly difficult issues…led to a brilliantly executed finale which to my surprise …brought the audience into the play. I’m so grateful to have seen this…it has evoked ongoing thoughts and will continue to act as an impetus for insights and important questions we must all face…for a long time to come. ... Read more
