A brand new drama by Tom Stoppard

Roundabout Theatre presents the New York premiere of four-time Tony winner Tom Stoppard's romantic drama, Indian Ink. The story takes us across two continents and two eras, and stars Tony winner Rosemary Harris as a woman who tries to understand her older sister's legacy. Stoppard wrote Indian Ink based upon his 1991 radio play, In the Native State. Indian Ink received its world premiere in 1995 in Guildford, England.

Sir Tom Stoppard is the award-winning playwright of Arcadia, The Invention of Love and The Real Thing, which is also being staged as part of the Roundabout's 2014/2015 season. In 1998 he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film 'Shakespeare in Love', which he co-wrote with Marc Norman.

What is Indian Ink about?

Set in the 1930s, this moving play first follows a young English poet, Flora Crewe, as she travels through India. The country is on the verge of gaining its independence and there Flora finds creative inspiration as well as love. The narrative then moves fifty years forward in time to 1980s England, where Flora's younger sister, Eleanor (played by Rosemary Harris), tries to preserve the legacy of her sister's career. As she comes to learn more about her older sister's past and creative spirit, the two are drawn closer through art though they are world's apart.
