Lucy Kirkwood's previous plays have dealt in large-scale, global themes and The Welkin dazzles with just as much ambition in its examination of the big, immovable structures that inflict violence on women.

Tony award nominee Lucy Kirkwood's groundbreaking play, The Welkin, is touching down Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater's Linda Gross Theater this spring, starring Sandra Oh. Taking the position of Director is the British multi-award-winning Sarah Benson, who is often described as having "audacious taste in plays" and is responsible for what Forbes has described as the best Super Bowl ad of the year. A thrilling courtroom drama filled with dishonesty, suspense, and sisterhood, of a kind.
Oh makes her stage return as midwife Lizzy Luke, who steps up to defend a young woman accused of murder. She'll be joined by Tilly Botsford, Paige Gilbert, Ann Harada, Jenn Kidwell, Mary McCann, Emily Cass McDonnell, Dale Soules, Danny Wolohan, and Haley Wong.
What's it about?
The year is 1759 and we find ourselves in a courtroom in rural England. The disgraced Sally Poppy takes the stand, accused of murdering a child, with the most important testimony being that of her husband, and she makes no secrets of her extramarital affairs. A jury of women will be responsible for the outcome of the trial, but what will happen when Poppy claims to be pregnant?
