Fierce Fun

An Elvis impersonator must try his hand as a drag artist in Matthew Lopez's brand new comedy, which opens Manhattan Theatre Club's new season. A delightfully witty and agile farce, The Legend of Georgia McBride premiered in Denver last year, and transfers to Broadway under the stewardship of original director Mike Donahue. Much of the same cast return, with the addition of Dave Thomas Brown (Heathers The Musical) in the lead role of Casey.

The Legend of Georgia McBride is Lopez's second work to be staged by Manhattan Theatre Club. The company presented his off-Broadway debut play The Whipping Man in 2011, which was greeted with universal praise from the critics, with The New York Times calling it "haunting, striking and powerful". A tight three hander set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, it has gone onto become one of the most frequently produced plays in the country.

Casey is an enemployed Elvis impersonator in need of a quick buck. In desperation, he takes up a job offer from drag queen Miss Tracy, to fill in for her drunk partner at a night's cabaret performance. Turns out he's a natural, and soon he's decked out in sequins and warbling Barbara Streisand with the best of them. However, he's kept his new job secret from his wife Jo, who's starting to wonder about her husband's newly unleashed feminine side.
