On Your Feet!

Why see On Your Feet!?

Latin rhythms are heading to Broadway!

Never mind Jay-Z and Beyonce, the Estefans were the original superstar music couple. She is one of the biggest selling singers of all time, while he's the mastermind producer behind dozens of massive names. What's better still is the story of their rise to fame, a true rags to riches tale, which is as close to the American dream as you can get. On Your Feet! is a new Jukebox musical which charts their careers and relationship, all soundtracked by Estefan's genre-defining greatest hits, including 'Rhythm is Gonna Get You' and 'Words Get in the Way', as well as some all-new tracks.

The show begins previews on October 5th, following a month long tryout in Chicago. In the director's chair is two time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, La Cage Aux Folles), while the choreography will come courtesy of Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys).

What is On Your Feet About?

On Your Feet! follows the life and career of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, two Cuban immigrants who rose to global prominence whilst never losing sight of their cultural heritage or their love for each other.

Gloria Estefan began her career in the band Miami Sound Machine, who released their debut album Live Again/Renancer in 1977. With their Latin-influenced synth-pop and disco, the group hit the big time in the eighties with tracks including 'Rhythm is Gonna Get You', 'Conga' and 'Dr. Beat'. Estefan later pursued a highly successful music and movie career, earning 7 Grammys in the process, and miraculously overcame a potentially paralysing broken back in 1990.

All this time she was supported by her husband Emilio, a massive name in the Latin music industry, who also helped shape the careers of Ricky Martin, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

Great Vibe

I was thrilled to see a play on Briadway that featured a true Miami Sound/Salsa/rhumba aesthetic! The Esteban's story is compelling and resonates with themes of survival, family dynamics, perseverance. The music is on point and exudes both high energy and seasoned skills. There are a few scene transitions that can use fine tuning as do some of the costumes, but it's otherwise a professional, turned up performance. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly! ... Read more
