Celebrating 80 years of groundbreaking dance, American Ballet Theatre proudly presents Then and Now, two programs that highlight the works and choreographers of past and present that have made a profound impact on the company's history. Then feature's Balanchine's Theme and Variations, Antony Tudor's Jardin aux Lilas and Robbins-Bernstein collaboration Fancy Free.
A dazzling showpiece of the balletmaster's technically demanding control and precision, Balanchine choreographed Theme and Variations to elicit the era of great imperial Russian ballet that flourished thanks to the Tchaikovsky's influence. Reaching the very height of classical elegance and purity, the 1947 work features a central pas de deux between a ballerina and her cavalier, building into a breathtaking finale featuring all of the cast's 26 dancers.
