Metropolitan Opera - Adriana Lecouvreur

Metropolitan Opera - Adriana Lecouvreur at Metropolitan Opera House

Why see Metropolitan Opera - Adriana Lecouvreur?

Opera Icon Anna Netrebko Stars In The Title Role

Russian diva soprano Anna Netrebko descends from the heavens to lend her angelic vocals to the first of the Met Opera's brand new 2018/19 season's productions. She'll take on the title role of Puccini contemporary Francesco Cilea's enduring Adriana Lecouvreur, a dramatic heroine whose beauty becomes the catalyst for great tragedy. Lead by Italian guest conductor Gianandrea Noseda, the opera is a sensuous, richly melodic musical feast for the senses.

David McVicar's critically acclaimed staging transports the action to a replica of a working Baroque theater, where Adriana Lecouvreur elevates acting to a new art form. Considered one of the greatest actresses of her time, Lecouvreur has the kind of beauty that lead to the fall of Troy. Adored by most who set eyes upon her, Adriana's heart belongs to Maurizio, the Count Of Saxony, who's dalliance with the Princess de Bouillon brings terrible destruction when he tries to leave the princess for his true love Adriana.

Incomparable Lecouvreur

Hard to imagine a better cast: Netrebko soared vocally, ranging from the full-throated spoken words of the title character’s stage recitations to the soaring notes of her death scene; 34- year-old Rachvelishvili, as her evil destroyer, showed why she is today’s reigning Verdian mezzo; and tenor Beczala brilliantly matched the vocal power of the ladies fighting for his affection. It was a New Year’s Eve to remember at the opera house. Yes, as drama the opera may be something of a clinker, a hoary, less than believable plot. But such powerfully beautiful music, in the pit by the Met Orchestra and on stage by incomparable vocalists, easily transforms soap opera into convincing tragedy. Even fighting drenching rain to make our way home from the opera house, Cilea’s neglected Lecouvreur kept ringing in our ears. Making seeing it one of your New Year’s resolutions. ... Read more
