The horrors of the French Revolution are laid bare in Umberto Giordano's dramatic imaginings of the life of the titular poet as he is caught up in the violence of a nation in turmoil. Starring Piotr Beczala as Chenier alongside Sonya Yoncheva as his lover, Nicolas Joel's production mirrors the passion and emotion of Giordano's score as the pair's life unravels, leading them to the final decision of the guillotine.
Loosely based on the life of the man himself, Andrea Chenier is a poet whose heart is stolen by a young aristocrat, Maddelena. But as the as the tumult of The Terror unfolds and the upper classes are hunted, Maddelena finds herself lost and in need of help from Chenier. When he takes her in, he invokes the ire of the envious Carlo Gerard, Maddelena's former servant, who has risen to the top of the new regime.
Facing a date with madame guilotine, it's all Maddelena can do to petition Gerard and make him see his love for her would best be put to use in saving Chenier, but will it be too late for these star-crossed lovers, captured in the darkest time of France's history?
