As part of the Metropolitan Opera's latest season comes this incredible production of John Adams' Egyptian epic, specially commissioned in 2022 by San Francisco Opera! Created in collaboration with stage director and librettist Elkhanah Pulitzer, Adams himself will be at the podium to conduct, overseeing Julia Bullock and Gerald Finely playing Shakespeare's ultimate power couple.
What is the story?
Picking up where Julius Caesar ended, Mark Antony is at the height of his power following Caesar's assassination. However, he leaves his empire for a life of seduction and decadence with his mistress, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Mark Antony becomes torn between love and duty, as his military brilliance deserts him, him his relationship with Cleopatra is thrown into danger.
