Metropolitan Opera - Champion

Metropolitan Opera - Champion at Metropolitan Opera House

Why see Metropolitan Opera - Champion?

New Production

Following on from the history-making 2021/2022 premiere of his second opera, The Metropolitan Opera launch this brand new production of multi-grammy award winner Terrance Blanchard's debut opera in spring 2023, with direction from John Robinson and choreography by Camille A. Brown. Telling the story of the rise of boxer Emile Griffiths, two performers share the role, with bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Griffith on his path to stardom and Eric Owens as the older, introspective Griffith looking back on his career.

What is the story?

Champion focuses on the fascinating life story of Emile Griffith, a professional boxer who went on to become a World Champion. Griffith, who was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America and number 33 on Ring Magazine's list of 80 greatest fighters of the past 80 years, has his compelling story excellently told through Blanchard's score and Michael Cristofer's libretto.

That the well-meaning vocal lines do not fit the protagonists, and the orchestra overpowers the performers, we have no worries, because this is the new direction of the MET. Despite some good invidual performances, this is a failure as an opera and indicative of more to come from Peter Gelb, who has met with many of our favorite classical singers trying to sell the concept of new pieces that will soon be forgotten. Thankfully, many of them have said "no" to his invitations, but none of his efforts seem to be in the best interests of the MET we have known for so many years! ... Read more

Run do not walk to see "Champion" at the Met Opera before it closes on May 13th! This is an amazing production with all the elements you want from opera - a powerful human story, superb performances by Eric Owens, Ryan Speedo Green, and many others, compelling script and music, spectacular costumes and fantastic choreography. Don't pay attention to the boring nay-sayers who cannot see the tremendous potential for the future of opera - it is here, in "Champion", accessible to all! ... Read more
