Metropolitan Opera - Les Pecheurs de Perles

As a musician I tell you that if you were to suppress adultery, fanaticism, crime, evil, the supernatural, there would no longer be the means for writing one note.

Lifelong friendship is tested in this rare opera by Georges Bizet in Penny Woolcock's returning production - one of the 2015/16 season's hottest tickets. Originally premiering in 1863 when Bizet was only 25 years old, he never saw a revival in his lifetime. But since the 1970's it has gained further notoriety as an early display of the talents of the man who went on to create Carmen. Pretty Yende stars as the off-limits Leila, with Javier Camerena and Mariusz Kwiecien as the poor rivals smitten with her.
What is the story of Les Pecheurs de Perles
Les Pecheurs de Perles (or The Pearl Fishers) concerns two fishermen, Nadir and Zurga and the reappearance of Leila, a Priestess of Brahma over whom they each swore an oath to the other not to pursue. But love, as ever, does not observe the rules, throwing the three of them into to a powerful turmoil, as betrayal and jealousy play their deadly game in this lushly romantic and scenic piece.
