Metropolitan Opera - Medea at Metropolitan Opera House

Why see Metropolitan Opera - Medea?

an explosive season opener

The 2022/23 season opens with a fierce flourish as the iconic soprano Sondra Radvanovksy lends her talents to the titular priestess out for blood in Luigi Cherubi's rarely performed masterpiece based on Euripides 431BC play. David McVicar directs this new production with the searing story of betrayal and savagery buoyed by grand set and costume design, all the better to elevate Radnovsky as she embodies the ancient heroine.

What is the story?

Having abandoned her father's kingdom for the love of Jason, the years have passed and their marriage is on the rocks. The cause? Jason has been betrothed to a princess to secure alliances. But where does this leave Medea and their two young sons, born out of wedlock? Determined to take back control of her life, Medea sets out on a course of pure destruction, with the sole intent of ruining Jason's life and causing him the worst pain imaginable.  Medea uncovers the heart of gender politics and asks the audience to consider what being a wife and a woman actually means for one's identity.

SOOO emotionally involved. I loved it. And incidentally I was widowed in August and almost didn't go alone. Boy am I glad I did. Thank you. Also the conductor was fabulous and the music so complex and incredible. ... Read more
