Just Friends

Lincoln Center Theater presents the world premiere of Bathsheba Doran's new play as part of their 2014/2015 season. Running at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, The Mystery of Love and Sex centers on a pair of childhood friends who become romantically involved, and is yet another intense and complex drama from the young English playwright. It's directed by Sam Gold, and stars Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk) and the Academy Award nominated Diane Lane (Man of Steel).

The Creatives

Bathsheba Doran is one of theatre's most exciting rising talents. After graduating from Cambridge University, she wrote for several cult British comedies including Smack the Pony, before moving to America to pursue further studies at Columbia and Juilliard. Her works have included Kin, which was staged at Playwrights Horizons in 2011 and hailed by The New York Times as an "exquisitely wrought comedy drama". She's also made a big impact on the world of television, having written episodes of Boardwalk Empire, Smash and Masters of Sex.

Director Sam Gold seemingly never sleeps. In 2014 alone, he helmed three of the most talked about, and star-packed, productions of the year: The Realistic Joneses with Michael C. Hall, The Village Bike starring Greta Gerwig and The Real Thing, which marked the Broadway debut of Ewan McGregor. This is the second time he's collaborated with Doran, having directed the aforementioned Kin.

What is The Mystery of Love and Sex about?

Charlotte and Jonny have been friends ever since they can remember. Now they're in college together and their relationship takes a romantic turn. It's a love affair which will reveal secrets from the couple's past and uncomfortable truths about their two families.
