Why see SUFFS?

Votes for Women

The 2024 Tony Winner for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score!

A century ago, Suffragette women of the United States were in an ongoing battle for the right to vote. 100 years later, SUFFS, directed by Leigh Silverman and written by the most exciting new voice in theater, Shaina Taub, transfers to Broadway after an extended run at the Public, to delight audiences with its fascinating look at these unsung trailblazers. You're invited along for the same ride they took all those years ago, so grab your placard and get ready to fight for what's right.

What Is The Story?

It's the early 1910's and a group of Suffragists have taken to the street ready to transform the country and protests against the likes of the public, the president and even each other. Their names? The SUFFS! This captivating story will take you on the journey of women working against the divides - racial, generational and class - with both victories and failures right up until the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.

It's a fight that is still far from over.

Did You Know?

In 1920, after women gained the right to vote the presence of women in Congress gradually increased and was especially noticeable by 1981. They have brought attention to gender-sensitive topics, children's rights and gender equality.

A Wonderful Experience Hearing a Story We All Need to Know

Shaina Taub’s musical Suffs is an eye opening rebel rousing look at the fight for women’s right to vote in this country 100 years ago. It’s a BIG story and some important pieces of information are left out in its 2 hour and 15 minute performance, but it’s the pieces of information that are left IN that will get you fired up and want to go out and do something to move the cause along. It’s the story of the struggle between the women who have been at it for decades and the young women who come in and feel a more radical approach is necessary. Although the lyrics are at times repetitive, they are moving and poignant. I thought I knew this story but I clearly did not. A march on Washington with 200,000 women in 1913?! Wow! Who knew? I loved every minute of this and cannot wait to see it again. The Music Box Theatre has good sight lines, but no elevator so be aware when choosing your seats. There is one 15 min. Intermission. This musical is worth your time. ... Read more
