Nominated for Best Musical Revival for the 2024 Tony Awards!
Five and a half decades on since it changed rock history forever, The Who's seminal rock opera Tommy returns to Broadway in roaring style! Freshly reimagined for a 21st century audience by its original creators, The Who's guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend and director Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, Big River), the production promises a ride through Tommy's amazing journey as thrilling as when it was first witnessed.
Originally released as a concept album in 1969 during the height of rock and roll's experimentation with psychedelia and exploration of deeper themes, Tommy was groundbreaking for its game-changing storytelling. Through the medium of rock music, listeners joined the deaf, dumb and blind boy Tommy on a traumatic journey through abuse, disability and eventual unlikely heroism, spawning classic songs such as Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me and The Acid Queen. Turned into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical in 1993, the musical's imprint on both rock and stage history is timeless.
What's The Story?
Townsend's swirling, kaleidoscopic score punctuates the fantastical tale of titular character Tommy, who descends into a catatonic state when he witnesses the murder of his mother's lover at the hands of his father. Despite being deaf, blind and dumb, Tommy discovers he has a prodigious talent for pinball, marking him for worldwide fame and glory. A surprising celebration of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, this classic production has earned its place in musical theatre history.
