Privacy

Why see Privacy?

Starring Daniel radcliffe

A play for our times, Privacy is a fascinating and ground-breaking look at surveillance and internet privacy in today's world. Daniel Radcliffe stars as The Writer, the play's central figure, who is trying to live a life online while still retaining some sense of identity which is entirely private. Around him playwright James Graham maps a collage of interviews with those at the forefront of this new sharing age, including journalists and security analysts, while also delving into the Edward Snowden Wikileaks debacle.

In keeping with the piece's subject matter, audiences are asked to keep their phones on to allow a new level of interaction with the play. Edward Snowden himself will also be appearing in every performance via a recorded video. This Donmar Warehouse co-production first premiered in London in 2014. Original director Josie Rourke returns for this New York transfer, while Rachel Dratch (30 Rock) is among the cast joining Radcliffe.

From Potter To Privacy

Since shooting to worldwide fame at the tender age of 11 in the first Harry Potter movie, Daniel Radcliffe has pursued interesting roles both on screen (this year's Swiss Army Man) and on stage. He made his proper stage debut at 17 in Equus at London's Gielgud Theatre, a brave and daring turn which won him many plaudits. His subsequent Broadway roles have included the joyful musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Martin McDonagh's darkly comic The Cripple of Inishmaan.

What is Privacy About?

Self conscious and shy The Writer (Daniel Radcliffe) is tasked with creating an identity for himself online by The Director. As The Writer embraces the internet, he becomes aware of the many debates surrounding privacy and security on the web. These issued are fleshed out around him by re-enactments of interviews with real life journalists and the like, building to a complex patchwork of action which is part fiction, part documentary and entirely enthralling.
