The 5th annual gala to remember the comedian's comic
Back for a fifth year, the Patrice O'Neal Comedy Benefit celebrates and remembers one of the most beloved comedians to grace the American circuit. After passing away in 2011, the Benefit has attracted the biggest names in the comedy business to perform in his honor. Known for his inimitable style of insult, dark satire and observational comedy, he was known for taking swipes at American politics, marriage, race relations, racism and sex. This year's guests include Bill Burr, Gary Gulman, Leslie Jones, who recently starred in the Ghostbusters reboot, Robert Kelly, Jim Norton, Keith Robinson, Dan Soder and Rich Vos.
Citing his main influences as George Carlin and Richard Pryor, O'Neill took their brand of insult roast comedy and turned it up to the 11 notch, much to the chagrin of comedy club owners. Struggling to find work in the early nineties, he relocated to the UK where his hard work and notable American accent gained him popular acclaim, and caught the eye of another comic, British-born Ricky Gervais. Taking part in the Roast of Charlie Sheen in 2011, it was to become his final television performance.
