Really Rosie

Really Rosie at New York City Center Mainstage

Why see Really Rosie?

Written by Maurice Sendak and Carole King

New York City Centre close out their new Encores! season with Maurice Sendak and Carole King's Really Rosie. This sweet, family-friendly show first premiered Off-Broadway in 1980, and has since become a mainstay of children's theatre groups worldwide. Combining the Where the Wild Things Are writer's empathy for his young protagonists and Carole King's unmatched talent for sparkling pop melodies, Really Rosie is a whipsmart musical that never once talks down to its young audience.

Inspired by a number of Sandek's books, Really Rosie is set on Avenue P in Brooklyn, and takes place over the course of a single day. The show centers on a group of friends whiling away the day, and in particular, Rosie, a precocious young girl who dreams of becoming a famous actress. To keep the others entertained, Rosie dreams up a movie musical based on her own life, and sets about casting her friends in the key roles. However, various problems arise during Rosie's production, and she must marshal all her efforts to keep her movie on track!
