New York City Center's Encores! season continues with a new staging of The Wild Party. A glittering but tragic love story set in the Roaring Twenties, the musical's events play out over the course of a single booze-filled night which has dramatic consequences for all involved. Tony winner Sutton Foster takes on the lead role of Queenie, following her acclaimed Broadway turn in 2014's Violet.
Written by Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family Musical, Big Fish) The Wild Party first opened off-Broadway in 2000, with Idina Menzel and Brian d'Arcy James among the cast. Though critically well received, it managed only 54 performances, so it's the perfect candidate for a reappraisal!
Married couple Queenie (Foster) and Burrs have lost the spark from their once passionate and volatile relationship. Under the influence of an increasing number of cocktails, the pair begin a bitter game of one-upmanship, flirting outrageously with the other guests at a party to see who can bed someone first.
