Why see Twyla Tharp Dance?

The Iconic Iconoclast Hits New york

From the moment Multi-award-winning Twyla Tharp stepped onto the scene, the world would never view movement the same. In honour of her company's 60th anniversary, Twyla presents a Diamond Jubilee that features two New York premieres, tied together with immaculate technique and decades of experience from this pure iconoclast. Over six decades, Tharp has blended the precision of ballet with the fluidity of modern dance, infusing her work with jazz, pop, and even Broadway influences. Her collaborations with legends like Baryshnikov and Sinatra brought her choreography into mainstream culture.

From movies to television, Broadway, and beyond, Tharp has shaped dance in both the 20th and 21st centuries. Her 1973 piece Deuce Coupe, set to the music of The Beach Boys, is still celebrated as the first crossover ballet. Tharp's passion for pop music remains alive, with ballets set to the music of Frank Sinatra, David Byrne, Bob Dylan, and more.

Program

Diabelli - New York Premiere

In Diabelli, Twyla takes on the towering challenge of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations - a feat no other choreographer has dared. She brings Beethoven's intricate, multifaceted genius to life, revealing the playful wit and emotional depth beneath every note. Each section of the music is met with Tharp's own imaginative response - sometimes tender, sometimes cheeky, but always transcendent - demanding nothing less than the full technical mastery of her dancers.

Aguas da Amazonia

A leap forward in time and spirit, Tharp's Aguas da Amazonia sets Philip Glass's rhythmic masterpiece into motion, reimagined with a fresh arrangement by Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion. Tharp's choreography channels the driving pulse and vitality of Glass's score, brought to life with a suite of custom-designed instruments. The dancers embody the relentless, flowing energy of the Amazon's waters, infusing the stage with a raw, propulsive force that feels as timeless as the music itself.
