The Damned

The Damned at Park Avenue Armory

Why see The Damned?

Ivo Van Hove's Latest Dramatic Triumph

Tony Award-winning avant-garde theatre genius Ivo Van Hove brings his latest twisted creation to the Armory stage in collaboration with Comedie-Francaise, one of the oldest theatre institutions in the world. Adapted from Italian film and theatre icon Luchino Visconti's 1969 motion picture, The Damned makes its hotly anticipated North American debut, seeming an almost prescient choice by Hove with its echoes of the current resurgence of the far right and nationalists like Donald Trump.

True to Hove's signature style, the production's minimal set design is augmented by roving cameramen capturing intimate moments, which are projected on to large screens that make the stage feel like a giant modernist art installation. The desolate scene is set for a dark drama about the rise and fall of the Essenbeck family in Nazi Germany. Power struggles, intrigue, ambition, corruption, betrayal, murder and politics blend to make a heady concoction that proves one of Hove's greatest and most ambitious works yet.

Searing and scalding

Searing and scalding, a harrowing tale of the von Essenbeck family as they play out their internecine struggles and face their eventual doom. The entire cast was extraordinarily good, especially the family matriarch Baronne Sophie and her son Martin. A play that lingers in the mind long after its end. How fortunate for us New Yorkers that the Armory brings us these wonderful productions. ... Read more

The Damned

Phenomenal, Disturbing, Topical. Brilliant Staging & Acting. Ivo von Hove at his best. Encouraging to see that The Armory has the courage to provide such a work in sharp contrast to Broadway's " cultural sedatives". ... Read more

Provocative: The Damned

Fantastically creative and imaginative staging. The cinematography was the highlight. Terrific use of the incredible space at the Park Avenue Armory. Somewhat of an assault on the senses, presumably intentional given the sordid story and that time in history. Don't bring anyone who is sensitive to loud noise, nudity or strobe lights. ... Read more
