She's A Country Gal

A stage version of country icon Loretta Lynn's autobiography turned movie, Coal Miner's Daughter, is in the works. Currently in development, the musical will be a veritable smorgasbord of Tony-winning talent. Sutton Foster, winner of two Tonys, is set to star, with Tony winners Sam Gold directing and Jeanine Tesori (music production) on the crew. The work will feature new material from the late Lynn, alongside all her greatest hits.

Lynn was one of the most notable country singers of her time, consistently winning awards throughout her sixty-year career, including four Grammys. Several of her hits were banned from the radio at their release, including "The Pill", which told the story of a young woman feed by birth control, and "Dear Uncle Sam", telling the tale of the sorrow of war widows.

The play was initially announced in 2012, with Zooey Deschanel in the lead role, and although this soon vanished into the ether, producers Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson stuck with the show.
