Choir Boy Extends Again!

Author News DeskNews Desk, January 25th, 2019

Now playing through to March 10.

After opening to rave reviews on January 8, and already one extension, the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Choir Boy has announced that they will be extending their Broadway run a second time. The play with music will now conclude its run at the Samuel J. Friedman on March 10 instead of the previously announced February 24.

Star of the show, Jeremy Pope will depart the production on February 24, with current understudy Jonathan Burke taking over in the role of Pharus Jonathan Young. Pope departs the production as he begins preparations for the upcoming Broadway run of Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations, which will begin performances on February 28.

The cast of Choir Boy includes Chuck Cooper, Austin Pendleton, Nicholas L. Ashe, Daniel Bellomy, Jonathan Burke, Gerald Ceasar, John Clay III, Caleb Eberhardt, Marcus Gladney and J. Quinton Jonhson. Choir Boy is written by Oscar winner (Moonlight) Tarell Alvin McCraney with direction by Trip Cullman.

What is Choir Boy about?

The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys is preparing for its 50th Anniversary. It's the kind of establishment that hews close to tradition, so when Pharus, a gay student who has been socially shunned by his peers, is selected to lead the school's choir, it causes a stir. Once Pharus' detractors embark on a hate campaign against him, the headmaster brings in renowned historian Mr. Pendleton to dampen the tension.

Choir Boy is currently playing at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre through to March 10.
