Glenda Jackson's King Lear to bow out early

Author News DeskNews Desk, June 3rd, 2019

Show posts June 9 closing date

Following 34 preview performances and 76 regular performances, the acclaimed revival will shutter one June 9, one month earlier than originally planned.

Starring Oscar and Tony winner Glenda Jackson, Sam Gold's production was a critical hit but has proved to be one of the first of this year's Tony casualties, despite earning a Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play nomination for Ruth Wilson.

Originating in London's West End, the show marks a welcome return to the stage for Jackson, who, at 83 years old, embodies one of the finest performances of Shakespeare's Mad King.

So, if you've not had your chance to catch this historic hit, don't delay!

The Story of King Lear

When the aging Lear finally decides to retire from rule and divide his kingdom among his three daughters, what he imagined to be a straightforward process is thrown into complete anarchy - as his grasping family all conspire to drive him out of his mind. Consumed by the fierce storm of treachery, Lear finds that his life hangs in the balance and embarks on a perilous journey to save his soul from damnation. What is a king to do as the vultures circle?
