Tony's Series: The British Media Plays Taking Over Broadway!

Author News DeskNews Desk, May 7th, 2019

A brand new series highlighting the biggest nominees!

Welcome to the first installment of our 2019 Tony's Series! For the next five weeks, we'll be taking a look at this year's biggest nominees. First up, it's the five-time nominated play Network and the six-time nominated production of INK!

Both heralding from a small city called London, INK (directed by Rupert Goold) and Network (directed by Ivo van Hove) have taken Broadway by storm with their unflinching and searing look at world media, and their perpetrators. With Network focussing on the potential evils of the modern news cycle, and INK portraying the rise of one of the most controversial papers (and businessmen) in the world, The Sun, both productions make for interesting watching.

British playwrights have always enjoyed making the media (whatever that may entail) the subject of their creativity. From David Hare's "Pravda" to Jeffrey Archer's "Exclusive" London has been littered with 'media' plays for decades, and now it seems it's Broadway's turn. From teen-friendly musicals like Dear Evan Hansen to our two Tony nominees currently on stage, the media in all its glory, and evils is getting its time in the sun (no pun intended).

Although Network focusses on television and INK focuses on tabloids, both of these scintillating productions ask us "who can we trust to tell us the truth?"

Will a whole host of Tony Award nominations to their names, don't miss your chance to be a part of the audience for these trailblazing dramas!

NETWORK by Paddy Cheyefsky and adapted by Lee Hall - Playing at the Belasco Theater through to June 8

A chilling black comedy, Network is the story of newsreader Howard Beale who becomes increasingly outraged with the way that proper 'news' is devolving into a circus. After being fired following ailing ratings, Beale's desperation leads him to deliver the rant of his career, threatening a bloody outcome to his final broadcast. Whilst planning his on-air suicide, ratings go sky high in this cautionary tale of anger and exploitation. BOOK HERE

INK by James Graham - Playing at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre through to July 7

Playwright James Graham (Labour of Love, Quiz and Finding Neverland) presents a searing portrait of Murdoch at the time in this dark comedy of indelible resonance. Directed by Rupert Goold, this production comes direct from London's West End where it pulled in a cosmos of stars from the critics and an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play for original star Bertie Carvel (Matilda) who will feature in this transfer alongside Elementary's Johnny Lee Miller.
