The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

Why see The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical?

The gods come to broadway

The off-Broadway and touring hit The Lightning Thief comes to Broadway for a limited 16 week run this holiday season! Based on the immensely popular young adult novel by Rick Riordan The Lightning Thief follows Percy, whose strange powers see him set out on a quest like no other.

With a book by Joe Tracz and music by Rob Rokicki, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical garnered three Drama Desk nominations when it debuted off-Broadway. Punctuated by an upbeat pop-rock score The Lightning Thief is set to be the most electrifying new musical of the season, don't miss it!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Far from being purely mythological, it turns out that the Ancient Greek gods are very much real, and they are causing havoc in the life of a 12-year old boy! The son of sea-god Poseidon, Percy experiences a day at school where nothing is as it seems; his best friend is in fact a satyr sent to protect him, and his wheelchair-bound teacher is none other than the legendary centaur mentor Chiron. Armed with newly discovered powers that he must control, he heads to a school camp like none other where he discovers that he is far from being the only offspring of a god.

When his human mother is kidnapped, and the lightning bolt of Zeus is stolen, he sets out on an epic road trip and quest with his new friends to recover it before the gods declare in all-out war. Throw into the mix some deadly monsters, and you have a battle on your hands! From the underworld to Olympus, from Vegas to the forests, this is one action-packed musical adventure that takes you

The Music Is Wonderful ANd It's an Honest Adaptation Yall just Hate Fun.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing it, I have listened to it multiple times. Greek gods and Percy Jackson have always been my favorite things, I'm re reading these books because of how much I love them. The movies were a false, cash grab that even the author of the books hated. THIS musical has charm, and hart. It's honest in it's tone, it adapts the scenes perfectly, it combines only a few and FEELS like Percy Jackson. This isn't a snooty Broadway production, that's true, but it's clearly a labor of love. Critics just don't like fun. Hearing this music felt like reading the book all over again for the first time, suddenly I was 11 years old experiencing the wonders of the Percy Jackson universe, that is a good adaptation and a good musical. It deserves more love, because what it brings to the table is love. It's a new musical era, and it is wonderful and refreshing. ... Read more

Loved it!

Fantastic show. Kudos to Mirvish for bringing it here. Chris McCarell and Jorrel Javier were outstanding! My 11yr old has read pretty much all the Rick Riordan books. I read lightning thief this last week :). Amazing what 7 hugely talented actors can do. We go to a lot of Mirvish shows. This was well worth it. Helps if you’ve read the book ;) ... Read more

A loving adaptation

This is a charming and innovative way to adapt such a dense middle-grade/ya novel. The show's writer's clearly wanted to do make their adaptation as faithful as possible to the books (admirable considering the time/tech constraint that come with a traveling show). The songs definitely resembled the pop-rock style that's become more popular with shows like Dear Evan Hansen and Be More Chill. So being a It all came together really nicely in the second act with some very fun musical numbers. It was also delightful to see the small ensemble slide into different roles throughout the show. All in all, this was a fun night out at the theater that made me want to reread the books ASAP. Truly the only downside is that as much as I'd love a sequel the musical theater format makes it pretty much impossible to continue the series. ... Read more
