Avenue Q To Close In New York
Must close April 28
After 15 years in New York, the puppet-fuelled three-time Tony-winning comedy Avenue Q is set to close. Originally opening on Broadway at the Golden Gate Theatre in 2003, the show enjoyed a six-year run before heading off-Broadway in 2009.
The show features a score by Tony-winner Robert Lopez and Jeff Marks with a book by Jeff Whitty. Famed for its realistic view on life and smart and fast-paced comedy, Avenue Q became a cultural and commercial hit and inspiring musicals like The Book of Mormon.
With hit songs like 'I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today' and 'It Sucks to be Me', the musical won three Tony's in 2004 including the coveted Best Musical awards, along with Best Original Score and Best Book.
What is Avenue Q about?
Taking the neighbourhood of Sesame Street as its model, this show centers on the weird and wonderful folks who live on Avenue Q, a run-down borough of New York. Into their midst comes Princeton, a recent graduate with a BA in English and not much else, who's figuring out what to do with his life.
In his quest to find a meaning to it all, he meets child star turned janitor Gary Coleman, the porn-addicted Trekkie Monster, his closeted Republican neighbour Rod and many others. Together this band of disparate friends will discover that sometimes you've just got to put striving for greatness on hold, and be content to be, y'know, normal.
Avenue Q is currently playing at Stage 3 at the New World Stages until April 28.
