Dear Evan Hansen Sets Broadway Closing Date!

Author ScarletScarlet, June 8th, 2022

The Tony-award winning music is bidding farewell to Broadway

Broadway has been Dear Evan Hansen's home for the last six years, but like all good things - they must come to an end. The Tony-winning musical will play its final performance at the Music Box Theatre on September 18.

By the time it's closed, Dear Evan Hansen will have played 1,678 performances and 21 previews, making it into the top 50 longest-running shows in Broadway history.

It feels like the end of an era with Hansen closing on Broadway. The achievements it's had since its original Washington D.C. production, the cast's we've seen come and go (both on Evan's arm and on-stage) and it's novel and film adaptations. It almost "Feels like we could go on for forever this way."

The journey of Dear Evan Hansen

In 2015, Dear Evan Hansen premiered at the Arena Stage in Washington with Ben Platt in the title role. It received seven nominations for the Helen Hayes Award, taking home three of them including Outstanding Musical. The Washington production ran from July 10 to August 23, 2015.

Less than a year later on March 26, the musical opened Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theatre with the Washington cast repeating their roles. The Off-Broadway engagement ran for two months and closed on May 29, 2016. Two months was enough for the production to receive multiple awards including Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics, Obie Award for Musical Theatre and Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor (Ben Platt) and Outstanding Featured Actress (Rachel Bay Jones).

Within six months of their Off-Broadway production, Dear Evan Hansen stole the Broadway spotlight and began previews November 14, 2016 with its official opening December 4. At the 2017 Tony Awards, Dear Evan Hansen swept the stage with nine nominations, taking home six of them including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actor (Ben Platt), Best Performance by an Actress in a Feature Role in a Musical (Rachel Bay Jones) and Best Orchestrations. In 2018 it bagged a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program.

Following its success, Dear Evan Hansen hit the road on its first National tour in October 2018. Ben Levi Ross took to the title role and by December the tour was scheduled for 50 cities.

In March 2019, the show played its first international performance at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. Robert Markus donned the Dear Evan Hansen arm-cast and despite the booking period extending through September 2019, the production closed early in July.

The production then headed over seas to the West End where the Noel Coward Theatre welcomed it with open arms. The show began previews in October 2019, before the official opening in November. Sam Tutty played the role of Dear Evan Hansen where he won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and Critics Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer. The West End recently announced that it will also be saying farewell to Dear Evan Hansen on 22 October 2022.

It's been quite the journey, and we can't wait to see what happens with Dear Evan Hansen next - as we're sure this won't be the last we see of it. Make sure you grab your tickets to be part of the Broadway journey before it comes to an end on September 18.
