Hadestown Welcomes The Wiz's Stephanie Mills
The Grammy Winner Will Play The Role of Hermes
Stephanie Mills, best known for her performance as Dorothy in the original 1975 production of The Wiz, is set to return to Broadway in the Tony-winning musical Hadestown. She will take over the role of Hermes beginning on July 2 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, replacing current cast member Jon Jon Briones, who plays his final performance on June 30.
Mills expressed her excitement about this opportunity, saying, "The joy of life's full-circle moment for me is returning to my rootsonly this time as Hermes in Hadestown. Power!". This marks Mills' first appearance on Broadway in over three decades (last seen in 1989), and she brings her rich experience from her earlier role in The Wiz to this new venture.
Hadestown, inspired by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, features a Tony-nominated book and a Tony-winning score by Anas Mitchell. Directed by Rachel Chavkin, the musical opened in 2019 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Mills joins a talented cast that includes Jordan Fisher as Orpheus, Phillip Boykin as Hades, and Ani DiFranco as Persephone. The show continues to captivate audiences with its incredible reimagining of the classic Greek mythology on the Broadway stage.
